- Passengers stripped naked, branded, whipped, starved, and crammed into the crawlspaces of the ship
- Death by scurvy, smallpox, and dysentery were very common
- About 1/2 of the departing passengers would make it to the Americas
- Passengers chained together and crammed into spaces less than 5 feet high
